According to L’Équipe, US businessman Foster Gillett is set to buy French top-flight soccer club Olympique Lyonnais. The Ligue 1 club is said to have agreed for Gillett to become its new majority shareholder in a deal worth around €600 million (US$636 million). Jean-Michel Aulas, who has owned Lyon since 1987, is expected to remain president for the foreseeable future. The club has a mens team, a women’s team, and owns part of the National Women’s Soccer League team, the OL Reign.

A formal announcement is expected to be made within the next ten days. Gillett is the son of former Liverpool co-owner George Gillett, who spent three years as owner of the English soccer giants. Rox and Ken discuss why billionaires buy soccer clubs and the hidden potential behind the deal.
